Instructors >>Claudia Barbuto

Claudia is a graduate, with distinction, from Karen Pryor Academy for Animal Training & Behavior and holds the Certified Professional Dog Trainer - Knowledge Assessed certification through Certification Council for Professional Dog Trainers.

After many years of involvement in dog-related activities, Claudia decided the best way she could make a difference in the dog and human world was to become a professional certified dog trainer. She believes that keeping dogs and humans together by teaching them how to trust, relate and communicate with each other is the key to keeping dogs out of shelters and pounds. It wasn't until Claudia adopted her second dog, Rocky, a bichon-poodle mix (and a many-time returnee to the local Humane Society), that she truly understood the beneficial and long-lasting effects of force-free training. Positive training helps guide him into making better choices, especially when it comes to impulse control. Rocky is currently a thriving dog enjoying his life in Claudia's home.

Claudia believes that it is extremely important to give back to the community. Currently, Claudia is an active therapy dog handler in partner with Zack, also a bichon-mix. In addition to holding the Canine Good Citizen certification, Zack is also a Therapy Dogs International Certified Advanced therapy dog. She and Zack have more than 125 confirmed visits with assisted living facilities and schools in the area. In addition to her therapy dog work, Claudia volunteers at local shelters and rescue groups, evaluating dog and human partnerships as well as providing a head start for the shelter dogs by training basic manners. She has also volunteered for multiple dog search-and-rescue organizations including Connecticut Canine Search & Rescue. In 2014, Claudia received the President's Volunteer Service Award for her canine volunteer work.

Claudia and her partner share their home with Rocky and Zack, as well as with a pug named Fiona. When she is not out walking her dogs, Claudia enjoys photography and can often be found at her favorite local yoga studio or in the drive-thru at Dunkin' Donuts picking up an iced coffee.
